According to a 2019 demographics report generated by the American Speech Language and Hearing Association(ASHA), minorities make up less than 8% of its approximate 200,000 members. In an effort to address the low number of African American, Hispanic, Asian and other minorities that are choosing Speech Pathology or Audiology as a career path and retaining those that are currently practicing, S.I.S.T.A.s (Sisters in Speech Therapy and Audiology) was formed. We celebrate our uniqueness and our similarities, while at the same time recognizing, that it is up to us to educate our community, cultivate, and inspire other young women to enter and succeed in the fields of Audiology and Speech Pathology. We are our SISTAs Keeper!
Our PURPOSE is to:
- Increase NETWORKING opportunities between like-minded women across the nation to share information that will educate, motivate, inspire and uplift as they seek to impact the field.
- Over the past 5 years, S.I.S.T.As has evolved. Due to a strong desire to do more and give more, our scope has expanded to SISTAhood and SERVICE! We were already doing it, why not make it official!
- That’s what SISTAs is about…RECRUITMENT, RETENTION, SISTAhood, SERVICE and SCHOLARSHIP!
